Restaining or painting western red cedar German siding

I installed western red cedar siding on my 1951 ranchhouse 15 years ago and have not kept up restaining. There is some cracking where exposed to sun. What is the best way to refinish my siding, stain or acrylic latex, and why. My objective is to limit restaining or painting. Thank you.
