Replacement Windows - Dazed and Confused

I'm in the process of looking for a good quality, high efficient replacement windows for my home. I have 20 windows to replace all pretty average sized windows. I've had Anderson Renewal quote me about $1000 per window, a Fiberglass window company about $600 per window and I'm told I can get a vinyl window for about $300. All costs include install, trim, tax, out the door price. The Andersons are simply way to expensive, I can't seem to justify that kind of money. The Fiberglass company talk about their tensil strength, etc, but I've read the tensil strength is really irrelevant. Although they seem like a superior product, I've read that Vinyl is actually more energy efficient. I just have no idea who or what to believe. I used to live in a very old victorian style home where we replaced the large windows with vinyl some 20 years ago. All the windows bowed in the middle, which has scared me away somewhat. On the other hand, that was 20 years ago. These days is there a vinyl window that's going to last 30 years? Please help, I don't know what to do and energy prices are killing me! Thank you.

A quality vinyl window will seal insulate that space practically as well as the wall itself.

Yes, the vinyl windows of today are far superior to those of 20 years ago.

I'd move your focus to vinyl - but be sure to compare products well, as there is a wide range from cheezy to really good. Get 3-4 estimates and make sure to get pruduct info for the windows they recommend and check them out well. Be careful, too, for cheapies that can't be dis-assembled if a windowpane breaks.

SEARS just left my home and left me with an estimate for about $900 per window. Does anyone know what is reasonable price for quality vinyl window? I know SEARS has a quality product, but that price seems pretty steep. Does anyone have suggestions on comperable brands? Thanks much!

I have access to a good vinyl window at a price of $1.35 an inch...and the way to determine the number of inches is to measure across the top and down one side of the opening, add those two numbers and multiply by $1.35 to get the cost. I have no Idea of the cost in others areas of the country. The instillation chare runs an average of $200 per window.

I'd never pay $900 per. That's an inflated price on the window and rediculous labor costs.

I don't have a price per sq inch or sq foot price, but around here the ballpark is $200-250 per window (just materials).

When it's 1-5 or 6 windows, we do it ourselves. It is very easy...really.

The last big job we had done (16 windows) we paid $150 per window for the labor.

It's good that you got estimates at least. Some companies pressure oyu into buying windows like I did. Unfortunately, I was in a desparate situation because I have 2 small children and absolutely no time to do the windows myself. I bought cheapies at home depot at another house I owned and ended up regretting it. It took me all day to do 2 windows and it didn't make any difference. I know I paid way too much money for the windows but I am fighting them because it didn't produce the results they claim it would. The manufacturer of the windows are coming out to look at them since I am comlaining so much. Like rick said, do your research. You can definitely get cheaper prices then $900. They all seem to offer almost the same product. They just have a little different attribute and inflate the price because of it. Good luck.
