I have a 1920"s stucco home. They still have I believe, possibly the original doors. My wife wants new doors,so do I. I want to attempt to buy replacement doors with jams attached. I didn't remove anything yet,but measured jam thickness of old doors. It is larger then doors at Home Depot. What do I need to do. Get it professionally Installed?? On the outside of the door jamb, measure the outside edge of the molding, keep that measurement and then also measure from the top of the molding down to the threshold, take both of these measuments to home depot, they should give you a door that is smaller than what you have, you'll mostlikely have to remove the molding on the outside and replace it with something wider to fill in the size difference. Or you can leave the brick molding on and cut smaller pieces to fill in the gap.

Also when you pull the old door out, measure the rough opening, which is stud to stud it need to be 2 and 1/2" bigger than the door its self, example if the door is a 36" then the rough opening needs to be 38 1/2" a 32" will be 34 1/2"

My biggest concern would be the height of the new door, I run into this a lot with the new door being taller than the old door. Just get measurements and make sure they work before you tear out the old door you have.

As for hiring an installer, the going rate where we are is 225 to 299 for a 3-0 and 399 for a 5-0 or 6-0

To say whether you should hire someone or not, is hard to say since I don't know your background, if you do it would save a lot of measuring and if you botch the door up your just out money and then you still have to hire someone,

QUESTION: If I need a jam extension,does this get added to exterior of door? Do I remove trim around new door first brick mold--I thing term is? Or does ext. jam go on first,then new door? Your help is appreciated.:confused:

sorry been on vacation,

install the door as it is, and before you install the interior trim, install the extension jams first, you can hold a 1/4 reviel as you would the casing, usually the extension jam will be a 3/4x 3/4 piece by maybe 81" tall, after you install that just install the casing as you normally would
