I have several double pane windows that are foggy. I don't want to replace the entire window - just the panes. Is that possible? They are aluminum - I'm guessing @15 years old.

I already contacted one home improvement company (who advertised fixing this exact type of problem) but they told me to contact a glass company -(I'm thinking they just didn't want to do a small job).

What type of company do I need to contact? A glass company or a window replacement company?

Contact a glass company. You need to remove the thermal panes from the casement. The thermal panes are two pieces of glass separated by and bonded(glued) to a metal frame. Once the seal between the metal frame and the glass is damaged then moist air gets between the two panes and the unit must be replaced. The unit is removed by taking the aluminum strips that hold the pane in place out of the window then pushing the thermal pane out of the window casement. Often this results in the thermal pane breaking.

Glass companies do this kind of work all the time. Be careful and tell them it is not an emergency. Get an approximatel quote on the phone from a few companies before calling anyone in. Glaziers (the men that work for glass companies) are not the cutting edge of society so I suggest that you have someone one with you when you invite one into your home. They will often do the job cheaper for cash.

And do not pay them up front. Nm

Some of this could depend on the brand of window. You might contact a local dealer. If you are the original owner, there might even a warranty. A pro rated, 20 year warranty may not be worth too much.

If the window is older it's seal could be compromised and thus when air/moisture gets between the two pieces of glass it condenses. I was told that this issue really requires the whole window to be replaced. I have had several windows display this problem at my rentals. I replaced them as the seal that was original could fail again at another point and I'd have spent good money on a bad problem. The company that didn't want your business may know something you should know. I would probably follow up with a call to a reputable glass company. I'd get in writing any guarantee for the "fix", if there is one. Sometimes you just need to replace the offending item. (It always goes against my scottish soul to replace items I think should be repairable.) KaCe

I just repaired my own windows using a kit I about at defogkits.com

It came with a glass drill bit (which I already had) and had the most vents/valves I could find online -30. And it was the cheapest price as well. Everything turned out great- they even provided cleaning accessories for the inside of the window. I just had to buy a plastic syringe at Home Depot. They also send steop by step foolproof directions. I'll post pics soon.

You have insulated glass that can be replaced without replacing the frame. Look in the yellow pages under Glass, Plate and Window and call them about replacing insulated glass. You should be able to find someone that gives free estimates. If you bought the home new, definitely find out about the warranty on the windows, you may get free replacements.

Some windows do not have removable sashes, so this may not be possible in your case.

I fixed 6 windows on my own using a kit from defogkits.com. It was fairly easy and dirt cheap at around $20.

The kits at defogkits.com seem to reduce R-value of the windows. Is this a big factor that needs to be considered. I have couple of foggy(white stuff) windows and few more moisture locked windows.
