cleaning outside red brick walkway

How does one clean outside red brick being used as a walkway. Mineral deposits from the water system have left white stains around the plant pots. Have tried calcium type home cleaners without much sucess. what will clean the brick back to a red only color and then what can one put onto the brick as a deterent to future discoloring ??

acid and water mix (at local hardware store )
brush and rinse

I also have a huge section of my neighbour's brick wall with a horrible white mark, made by their dodgy oveflow.. is there a brand name for the acid and water mix?
