Being partial to Irish dance myself, I would find the local Irish dance studio and hire their performing company to come and do a fantastic hard shoe routine (think Lord of the Dance).

I would have a pub-like feel and have Guiness and Irish coffee and the tricolor flag all over the place. However, St. Pat's is a big deal with my crowd.

Get a podium with mic and have a roast. They did this on my 30th birthday and it was pretty funny.

I'm planning a luau for my mother's 50th. Party b/c it's unexpected in March

For my Aunt's 50th a few years ago, we had a tea party. I bought paper fans and large fake pearl strands for everyone to wear. My cousin and I gathered old fashioned hats (she borrowed from a High School drama club). We served tea, chocolates, sweets and salads. The cake had a picture on it of her as a baby. My other aunt bought the birthday girl a dowdy black dress with a big white collar she had to wear with a wide brimmed hat. It was really fun!

50's Diner (Its possible to find a jukebox to rent)
Beach Boys
Information Please: 1957
Movie themes (Gone with the Wind, West Side Story -hit broadway in 1957)
The Mousketeers

Emland agrees: That sounds like so much fun

Base it on 70's trivia. Have posters of 70's TV shows, music playing (Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, and if you want to embarress her - disco). Put up pictures of her from her high school and college days. I was at a 50th for a friend and the host put us up into groups for a trivia contest - movies, news events, sports, etc. - if you do this be sure to mix up the ages in the groups so that its somewhat fair. They also handed out CDs to all guests with a mix of appropriate era songs.

Dear naughtynurse:

I came up with a new idea when I started planning my husband's 50th birthday party. I used "John's got the blues" as my theme.

The invitations had the heading, "John's gottha blues!" with an old photo of him.

I made a banner "John's gottha blues!" from an inexpensive pale blue plastic table cloth and black permanent markers and placed it in the yard with blue helium balloons tied to it.

The homemade chocolate cake had a cake topper that was a piece of cake with a blues man playing a guitar. The cake topper made a nice gift/50th birthday keepsake.

For serving, I used a blues guitar platter, a blue chip bowl, and a potato chip shaped bowl from Ceramics in Bloom Pottery by Sheri Hubbard. All the other server ware was clear glass.

I asked a guitar-playing friend to change the tune to "Happy Birthday" to a bluesy one.

It was fun and definitely different.

Set the date and time of the birthday.

Pick out fun invitations. Find some major events 50 years ago like the first publishing of Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat, Dodgers move from New York to Los Angeles, Civil Rights or the opening of Disneyland. Choose a major event to reflect the theme of the invitation.

Match your decorations to your invitations--a theme of a major event 50 years ago. Choose the standard "getting old" theme with black and grey balloons and streamers.

Choose some fun games that adults would like to play. Play Charades with the theme of movies, television shows and books 50 years ago. Run a brief, "This is Your Life" with family and friends offering upbeat stories. Keep it light and fun.

Play music the birthday guest enjoys while also adding popular music of 50 years ago.

Create a history lesson on index cards. You will need to do research. Throughout the party, make announcements like, "When Jane was born, Elizabeth Taylor married Michael Wilde" or "The day Jane got her driver's license, Richard Nixon resigned from the office of the President."

Create a 50-year timeline focusing on world events, popular music, discoveries, fashion, popular movies and other tidbits of information. Tack the timeline on the wall of the party room.

Ask a few friends to stick around after the party to help clean up.
