What is phantom load?how can we save electricity in labs using phantom load?

A phantom load is the constant drawing of electricity even when items are OFF.
To maintain Time, To keep something on standby, etc.
An example of saving electricty on a phantom load is, unplug VCR when not in use,
Reset time when needed again?
TV's have the IR receiver constantly powered.
