    Portable generator doesn't generate
I have a small gas portable generator that sat idle in the barn for several years. I have cleaned out the carberator and the engine runs fine. The problem is it is only producing 5 volts of electricity. What may be the problem?

The most likely is that the circuit does not produce sufficient magnetic field to provide power.
Are there any changes to the wiring? Check for an internal thermo-switch being tripped or burned out.
To generate electric power a coil must rotate in a magnetic field.
If there is no magnetic field (or hardly any magnetic field) there is no power produced.
That magnetic field is obtained and build up from the output of the generator itself. So there has to be some residual magnetism to start with.
    .
If all else fails : open up the generator, mount temporally a magnet near the rotor, and see what happens. Make sure that the magnet does not touch anything moving.
Let me know if that worked, please!
    ;)
