Outlook reminders gone

Our one and only exchange server crashed and since then, my calendar reminders don't work. I tried going to tools/options/other/advanced options/reminder options and checking the correct boxes, but it still doesn't work. Our IT guy is too busy with bigger problems. Any advice?
