Looking at a similar hotmail support forum question, as of July 2010, they were aware of the problem but had no solution at the time. Perhaps Curlyben has more information.

I spoke with csurman via a support email, did cursory research for him and suggested he post more detail in this question. There was an error in getting back to this original page, so he posted again.

    This is his detailed informaiton:

    1. open your hotmail

    2. directly to the right is a box and... within the box it says"search email"

    3. I want that to be blank not show a bajillion addresses I don't even recognize

    4. it's functuion is to provide access to emails I am "searching for

    5. I do not want to see old addresses if I put an a or ja in box

Sorry for any confusion I added to the process.

csurman, what "answer" are you looking for? My reply was (I thought) affirming what you said with your previous comment about how helpful Cliff's response was.

Try following this advice from Windows Live Support

Look at the second option to enable/disable. Let us know if that helps.

FYI - the instructions from the support page are below. csurman could not access the link:

Enabling/Disabling recently emailed contact data in auto-complete and contact picker:

Customers will be able to choose if they want the email addresses that they have recently communicated with to show up in the auto complete options while composing an email or not.

Important Note - The autocomplete/contact picker control will not display email addresses that resulted in NDRs (non-delivery reports).

    Follow these steps:
    1. Sign in to your Windows Live Hotmail account.
    2. Go to Options – More Options.
    3. Under Customizing Hotmail, choose Advanced privacy settings.
    4. Choose to either suggest email addresses that you've communicated with or only suggest people in your contact list.
    5. Click Save.
