    Wiring single pole thermostat in double pole fixture
    Hello,

    I am trying to install a line voltage programmable thermostat into a manual thermostat fixture. The programmable thermostat is Honeywell RLV430. Instruction manual here:

    The existing fixture has 2 red wires and 2 black wires, the thermostat has only 2 black wires.

    My question is, which colored wire should pass-through? I think red, however would like to hear some expert opinion.

    If you are located in the USA, then the National Electric Code applies, and a 1 pole thermostat is not allowed for a 240 volt heater, because both hot legs must be opened when the thermostat is turned off and used as the required disconnecting means.

    If you are in Canada, then I believe a 1 pole thermostat is allowed for 240 volt heaters, but best to check first with local code.

    I would not ask the clerk at Home Depot for advice, unless that person is licensed or certified in the electrical trade.

    I am in Seattle, WA. I bought this thermostat as this is the only programmable thermostat available for baseboard heaters.

    Can you recommend any other programmable thermostat for controlling electric baseboard heaters?
