What you need to tell us

Asking questions

Try to state the problem as accurately as possible. We have to understand your problem and we have to judge you capabilities by the way you ask your question.

State what you did to try to troubleshoot and solve it.

If you think a multimeter would be useful in solving your problem state whether you have or do not have one.

If you are in an area other than the United States and it’s not in your profile, this information might matter.

Try to be clear. If you’re asking about running a 240 V motor on batteries, state more info about the motor, particularly FLA or full load amps and whether the motor is AC or DC.

Typical residential power is 240/120 single phase in the United States.

When asking questions concerning wire size or feeders tell us where the wire is going such as pool, detached garage, attached garage, space heating etc. and any nameplate information you have such as voltage, current, horsepower, full load amps, kW and VA.

There is a choice of Aluminum and Copper wiring. Aluminum is generally used for high current feeders and for very long distances.

Distances may matter, so state the proposed length of the wire path.

Piggybacking

Try not to ask unrelated questions in someone else's thread. Start a new one using the "Ask about Electrical and Lighting".

Look for a solution

Many times you will find a solution by searching on this forum or on the internet. For instance, "How to wire a 3-way switch". There are lots of resources available on the internet and this forum.

Additional information

Links to manufacturer manuals are appreciated.
Pictures can be posted directly to this forum using "Go advanced" if you think that will help.

We really want to help, but we do this in our spare time. When we second guess, we sometimes end up talking to ourselves.

Thank you

There are also a couple things you can do to save yourself a lot of trouble.

Most residential electrical devices, such as switches, lights, and receptacles have two or three wires attached to them.

If you replace something, it is usually not necessary to un-hook all the wires inside the wall box. If there are 2 wires going to the switch, unhook those two wires and leave everything else alone.

If you must unhook any more wires, draw a diagram of how they are connected before you take them apart.
