    Transformer Details
Hi there, I am a newbie to electronics and would like to know.

1)Are there a diference between transformers for AC and DC.

2)If there is how do you determine that.

3)Are there a way to test a transformer to determine the

    the following: 1) Input Voltage,2)Output Voltage,3)Amps

    4)Input and Output Wires

    Electricity in South Africa = 240V 50HZ

    Thanks,

    Hello Jack

1)Are there a diference between transformers for AC and DC.

Yes. AC transformers exist. DC transformers don't exist.
There are transformers that have a build-in-the-cabinet rectifier-powersupply. Specially small transformers for electronic equipment feature that. So they are AC in and (AC to) DC out.

2)If there is how do you determine that.

I assume you refer to the outlet voltage here. Just measure with a voltage (universal / multi) meter. First check with meter in AC V mode. If no or hardly any indication, test in DC V mode.

3)Are there a way to test a transformer to determine the following:

    a) Input Voltage : use a multi meter in AC V mode
b)Output Voltage : use a multi meter as indicated under point 2
c)Amps : use a multi meter in Amp mode. NOT over the outlet voltage, but in series with 1 of the 2 output wires

4)Input and Output Wires (Electricity in South Africa = 240V 50HZ)

There is no firm wire color coding for transformers in South Africa.
For permanent wiring use standard wring code : brown for life, blue for neutral, and green/yellow for earth.
Secundairy wiring color coding is not regulated at all.
