Wiring for new Hunter ceiling fan
I am installing a new Hunter ceiling fan and the wiring instructions do not match what have in my ceiling box. I have one red, two black and one green. The fan has one black, one white and one black and white.

Which do I connect to which?

Do you have a white wire of any type in the ceiling?

What was there before the fan and how was it wired?

There's no white wire. Actually, I had a firend come over and between us we worked it out, The white from the fan connects to the red from the ceiling. The green to earth and the black and black and white from the fan to the live black from the celing box (had to have a meter to test which one of the blacks was live). The remaining black from the celing isn't live and we just capped it off. Not sure what it does.
So, the fan works from the wall switch and the light works from the chain pull.

Based on how you wired it, the fan and light should both work from the wall switch.

I bet if you leave the other black disconnected, something else in the area may not work.

What was there before the fan and how was it wired?

Something with this wiring is fishy.
