Rewiring a phone jack

Asked Mar 24, 2006, 02:55 PM — 3 Answers
Hi! Does anyone know how to rewire a phone jack? It's in my den but it's a different line/number than the one I use in the rest of the house. I want to put my computer/DSL/fax/answering machine in that room without running an extension phone cord across the floor and down the hallway. The phone company said all I have to do is switch the red and blue wires; but I still didn't get a dial tone. THANKS!

The standard color code for the first line is the red and green wires, and usually the cable has another pair, black and yellow.

What colors do you have at each jack?

THANKS, tkrussell, for your immediate assistance! You're right about those colors. I got really confused though, then decided to match up my wires in my working phone line with the one in the den that needed to be rewired. It works! Hopefully it will stay working! I matched the Red to the (master) Blue, Black & Yellow to separate grounds with no other wires attached, and Green to the (master) White (with blue/grey stripes). Now to move (ugh!) the computer & equipment in there with DSL filter....

Hollahan, Sounds like you have Twisted pair for phone.
White/blue to green Line 1 (+)
Blue white to red Line 1 (-)

White/orange to black Line 2 (+)
Orange/white to yellow Line 2 (-)
The wire you connect to red and green on jack will be line 1.
