    Power bill is killing me
My home is 2215 sqf. The only appliances I have that are electric are my refrigerator, hot water heater, dishwasher and my AC. My stove, furnace, and dryer are all gas. We have 5 people living in my home. Due to the amount of our power bills we never run the AC unless the heat is just to unbearable. We have everything in the house turned off when we aren't using it. My power bill runs around $450.00 in the summer and $250 in the winter. My neighbor has the same house I do and also has a 5 person household. His power bill is half what mine is in the summer and in the winter. I've used an amp probe and everything seems to be right. I've also had my meter replaced but it didn't make a difference. Does anyone have any ideas I'm at my wits end? :(

See if your electric company can do a energy audit of your home. They can see if the heating and cooling system are working at peak efficiency

Check to see if the ducts are insulated, a lot of heat/cool is lost there.

Is the hot water heater insulated, what is the rating on the ceiling insulation.

Is there a draft around any of the windows or doors, what about around electrical outlets.

The only other items I can offer is:

Compare temperature settings on water heater, settings on AC in summer.

Having the AC checked is good advice, many times if the unit leaked Freon, it will still run, and cool, but may take longer to cool to same temp as your neighbor.
Is there any electric pool/ spa/hot tub heaters?
Any freezers other than in the fridge?
Do you use the Dry cycle in the dishwasher? The dry cycle is a 1500 watt heater similar to an electric oven baking element.
Is the neighbor maybe using compact fluorescent lamps that you may not be using?
Have you compared electric bills with the neighbor? They may be getting charged a different KWH rate for some reason.
Are any exhaust fans used during the cooling season? I knew one home that had a whole house fan on with the air cond on, sucking out all their expensive cooled air.

Using the amprobe is a good way of finding what is on, have what may be energy hogs. Make a list of these items to help determine what is running when and see if something can be done to lower the usage.

I have had this complaint many times, usually find something set too high, or even items the owner was not aware of. You would be surprised how many people did not know their gas appliance was electric, not saying you don't know, but it has happened. I will sit down and consult with the client, and gently, interrogate them to have them explain there life style, without getting too personal.

Usually I can get them to realize that, while a home similar to theirs uses less energy, there is definitely something different. Could be how many or even when showers are taken, teenagers that use all the hot water for one shower, how many loads of clothes are washed, just trying to get you to look closer , I may be able to get you to see or think of something causing this.

You already did one thing I would suggest by having the meter checked. Thou rare, meters can be not calbrated correctly or otherwise defective. Not that this is very scientific but at any one moment, compare the speed of your meter to the neighbors, is his moving much slower at the same time during the day? Check a few times during one day. If yours is moving faster, you are using more power.

I probably did not help much except to cause you to think and observe more in an effort to help figure out the reason for the large bills. Get back with any more questions, comments, and certainly if you find the reason.

Cedar Deck Killing Lawn? [ 3 Answers ]

My sod has been in 4 years and has looked great. Now on the southeast side of the house near my cedar deck it is dying. It is slightly sloped there. Neighbors tell me that is common from the runoff of decks. Is that true? Will it come back with a lot of water?
