We could use a little more info. What color are your existing two wires? Is there a ground wire present? What are you connecting to that has a red and a black?

Red and Black could be 240 volts, or maybe, black is hot and red a switchleg.
Red and Black, is that the power or on the Equipment?

Black white and ground is likely 120 volts(verify). you are going to need 3 conductors to do safely and correctly. A hot, neutral and ground. See if ground was cut short and eleminated. Repair, then see what breaker it is on and is original on 2 pole breaker or breaker and neutral.
