It can but that may or may not be your problem. Read this troubleshooting guide that has several sections regarding noise, and determine what the source actually is:

If it turns out it needs oiling:

It's not a real problem but you'll have to take the fan down first. The motor has a lifetime warranty so all you have to do is call 1-800-527-1292, tell them the problem and give them the information from the motor. They'll either fax or mail you the form you need to ship the motor to them.

We have the decorative stand fan model #LDA0004. We purchased it in the fall of 2011. It started sounding like a plane taking off. We haven't used it because now it sounds like it gets quiet then get real loud, rattles then stops. It sounds like something is going out on the motor. Afraid it might start a fire. What should we do? I can't find my receipt and I purchased it from Lowe's.

Have two harbor breeze fans one has motor that will not turn anymore. The other one light kit was turned on and the light socket exploded with 25 watt bulbs in it. Want to know what I need to do. They are both about ten years old.
