Generally, remote controls like this have two parts:
  1. The remote control itself
  2. The receiver unit inside the fan
Both will have these DIP switches in them, and the codes must match. You could climb up on a ladder, take the fan apart, and see what the code is there...OR...

Since there are only 4 switches, you have only 16 possibilities for the code. Start with all switches in the remote control unit in the down position. See if it works. NO? Flip one switch up and see if it works. NO? Flip another switch up and see if it works...In an average of 8 attempts, you should find the code.

Here is a helpful diagram describing the switch positions.
Code:
Try # SW1 SW2 SW3 SW4
  1 Down Down Down Down
  2 Down Down Down Up
  3 Down Down Up Up
  4 Down Down Up Down
  5 Down Up Up Down
  6 Down Up Up Up
  7 Down Up Down Up
  8 Down Up Down Down
  9 Up Up Down Down
 10 Up Up Down Up
 11 Up Up Up Up
 12 Up Up Up Down
 13 Up Down Up Down
 14 Up Down Up Up
 15 Up Down Down Up
 16 Up Down Down Down
Why the strange sequence? Well, you might notice that between each try we only have to flip one switch. This is called Gray Code. A normal Binary counting would cause us to have to flip 1,2, or 3 switches between tries.

Once you know the correct code, write it on the battery cover or somewhere convenient. The next time the kids mess it up , you'll be able to instantly go back to the correct code.

I hope this helps,
WallyH

These guys are right. Guessing and checking is the only way, short of opening the fan up and matching the codes. Whichever is easier for you.
