GFCI will not reset-red buttons keeps popping

my one GFCI outlet pops its red button occasionally. Now it is has popped with nothing plugged into any of the outlets that I can determine are connected with it and it will not stay in - keeps popping out. what does this indicate, is it a fire hazard in any way, and what can I try? Meanwhile I am without an outlet in two bathrooms and one outside outlet (covered) Thanks

I wouldn't say that it is a fire hazard but you should just change the GFCI outlet for a new one. If it happens to do the same thing it is possible you are not correctly grounded. hope that helps.

lifescientist agrees: Very helpful. Feel better it is not a fire hazard. I will get someone out to fix it!

Elias:

GFCI's don't have to have a ground to work.

It's possible that a critter made a nest in the outside outlet,

The little red button popped out means there is a slight leakage path to ground and the button popped like it's supposed to.

Critters and moisture can easily do it. So can a defective outlet. So can defective wiring and so can a defective GFCI.

For starters, it means inspecting the outlets/boxes and wiring.

lifescientist agrees: Actually there is the possibility that moisture got on that outside outlet today. thanks!
