Actually, if your fan is made by any company that is not still in business, you're even even worse luck-- at least with a Hampton Bay fan you can go down to Home Depot, and ask them to open the box of the same model fan and let you look at how it's wired.
The truth of the matter is, for any pullchain with more than 4 wires, there's no tettling how it's hooked up. THere are several different pullchain options hookup options, different brands and even different models within brands are different. That's why you have to take very careful not when you remove the existing switch. Otherwise your only hope is finding someone who has the same fan and can share how theirs is wired.
