First, a frig should not be "running" all day. It may be plugged in, but certainly not using power. The compressor only runs when the temp in the compartment rises. The compressor will only run until the temp is satisfied. Each frig is unique, in that each is at a different setting, and the temp inside is dependent on the insulation factors and how many times the door is opened.

For example, a frig that is closed all day and at a typical temp setting, and the insulation does not allow the temp to rise quickly, and the ambient temp the frig is located in, may only run a total of 10 hours out of a 24 hour period. The same frig in another home, with all other factors being equal, but is opened more frequently, may run 15 hours.

Shutting off a frig to save on energy may actually cost more to run due to the temp rising beyond normal, and the compressor needing to run longer when it is turned back on to catch up, so to speak, to get the temp back down to the setting.

And the food inside may not be kept at the optimum temperature, and over time may spoil.

The best method to save energy having a refrigerator will be to purchase an Energy Star rated unit, keep the door closed as much as possible, keep the unit in an area that does not get too hot, like directly next to a range or heating unit, keep the compressor and coils clean of dust and dirt, and arrange the unit so that air can pass over the coils easily.

I would not recommend turning off a frig to save energy, There are so many other methods of saving, keeping lights off when not in use, install timers to control water heaters and keep off during long periods of no need for hot water, etc.
