When the child babbles, babble back. Echo whatever he says. Then you make noises--mmmm, bbbbb, kkkkk, ppppp, lalalala, etc.--and gradually he will begin to imitate you. Also say short words and sentences. Do not talk babytalk.

Walking--get a jumper chair or some kind of seat in which his feet touch the floor and he can push up and down to strengthen his legs. Do fun exercise movements with his arms and legs. There are books at the library that give ideas and have photos.

My boys were 18 months old before they walked. I was worried I would have to carry them for the rest of my life, but they finally figured it out. My sister's child figured it out before she was a year old. All kids learn differently and at different ages. When they are ready, they will walk, talk, read, be potty trained, ride a bike, rollerskate, come home on time after dates.
