Yellow lab gets black tar in hair
My yellow lab was in the country and rolled into some black oil or tar and she has hundreds of tiny black spots in her hair and I cannot get her clean. Do you know anything that will work?

Try diluted Dawn dishwashing liquid. Dab it on and rub, then rinse completely.

Dish soap isn't going to cut tar very well. Try cooking oil. It cuts almost anything and is perfectly safe.

If you are in the U.S. or any area where it is now summertime and warm, the easiest and most quick way to get rid of the tar is to take your dog to a groomer and have her hair trimmed. Don't let the groomer shave her down all the way to the skin, but a light cut with a groomers shaver should do the trick and her hair will grow back in prior to the weather turning colder.

If you haven't managed to get her cleaned up yet, Ruby's idea is worth a try. If it is extensive, the cooking oil would be a mess. Apply it, take a long walk, maybe finishing with a swim in the river?
