Why does my dog wake up in the middle of the night?
I have recently moved house. My dog (a cocker spaniel) has started to wake up several times during the night. This is driving me nuts. Have moved her crate several times, without any result. I have now put her crate into the bedroom, but she STILL keeps waking me up 2-3 times during the night.

I can't let her bark, as I have neighbours to consider too.. What can I do? I can't continue like this..

Perhaps unfamiliar noises from either inside or outside the house are waking her up. How about buying and using one of those white noise machines in your bedroom? We have one, and my husband likes it turned up high so I feel like I'm lying next to a busy airport runway. The pricier ones have several settings (waterfall, night sounds, heartbeat, gentle rain, seashore, etc.), and volume can be controlled. Keep her in the bedroom near you.

One or more of the dog experts will be along to give more ideas.

I agree, being in a new place in unfamiliar territory can be quite disruptive to your dog. He can hear and smell a lot better then we can, so if there is a strange animal or a person walking outside, more traffic or even less traffic than what he is used to, it can cause him to wake up. A new home can be pretty stressful on everyone, including the pets.

How old is your dog? Is she needing to use the washroom? I bet after a few months of her getting used to the sounds and smells of her new environment she will settle back into her normal routine. Remember she has no idea why she is in this new home, she doesn't even know that this is her home yet. So be patient.

    Thanks for your replies.

I've recently been to the vets with her and bought her a pheromone collar (as I did when I first got her, to help her to settle in.) She is 2 years old now. After reading some other replies on here, I went back to what I did when I first got her. Took away the water and food bowls at 9pm, took her for longer walks, tried to activate her, so that she didn't get to sleep so much during the evening, taking her out for her last toilet break just before putting her in her crate for the night, and then I let her "complain" during the night, but didn't take her out of her crate.

It worked! I didn't HAVE to take her out until around 7.30 this morning! I'm so relieved (and a little "punch-drunk" due to getting a full night's sleep, he he.)

I hope this will continue.. She got over her "move" the first time, so we will get over this one too..
