A friend of mine has a dog (he is not a very healthy pup due to his hernia, leg deformities and skin problems. which he had before my friend got him) he was bought from a breeder as a young pup and the breeder sold him an unhealthy dog and he paid for a breeding quality show dog.
Anyways. i got a call this morning from my friends girlfriend freaking out about blood all over everything after she let thug back in from outside (thug is his name) so i rushed over there (i am at her house right now) Thug somehow has ripped his nail almost completely off around a cm or two from the very beginning of his nail. i know the quick was ripped quite badly because it was bleeding more then i've ever seen . I got her to hold him which was not as easy as i thought because he is almost 80 pounds and his name fits his personality. while she was holding him i took ahold of his paw so i could look closer. the nail looks like it shattered completely. We called the vet and she told us to cut it off but cut it quick as it was going to hurt like the ens. now i cut my own dogs nails and all my friends dogs (they have four dogs) and i have never cut them too far to cause them to bleed. i tried explaining how high up the fracture in the nail was but she didnt seem to understand me at all. They have a vet appointment this afternoon at two but since she doesnt drive and i took a taxi to her place we cannot get him in any sooner.
Now looking at his nails they are white, almost completely clear and dont seem to be strong or thick at all. and insted of being thick nails the underside is shaped like a cresent moon . so it is Very Very thin.
What i am asking is. what can we buy to help stop the bleeding if it happens again. and what should we do when it does happen again. I told the vet that even though i have been trimming dogs nails for years its broken so high up i wouldnt dare cut it myself. but if it happens again we want to be prepared . my friend is scared they are going to remove his whole toe nail. somehow it doesnt seem to bother him that it is shattered. he even tries to scractch with that foot and everything (but we stop him every time he tries)

Firstly, if the dog was deformed and unhealthy no breeder would make you keep the dog if it was intended for show! You would get a refund or a replacement.

Potassium permanganate stops nails bleeding instantly. You should be able to get it from your vet.

yea right. this breeder has been shut down for selling unhealthy inbred dogs to alot of people in the us. only one was sent to canada and this is the one that was... no refund policy stated right on their website and no one has been able to return their dogs. plus they were scared if they returned it it would be killed, or worse tortured and suffer or not be taken care of properly. they paid 2000 for it and have paid 4000 in medical bills so far and have not had it for a full year yet

They are going through major lawsuits and the breed association has charged them and they are not allowed to open another breeding facility ever... and the person who sold them all their breeding stock has (through legal ways) taken all their dogs back from them

Wow, that really sucks, they could still probably be sued for medical costs on the dog, I would be contacting a lawyer and looking into it.
I'm glad they have been shut down though, its horrible getting a dog with so many problems, for the dog and for you.
We have been pretty lucky, we breed show dogs and none of ours have had any problems (we test for any genetic/hereditary problems). We purchased a puppy a while back for show and it only had one testicle (a major fault) and we contacted the breeder who was very apologetic and said that she would not only send a replacement but we could either keep the dog or re-home it ourselves.

we were wondering about that. as the medical bills were the main reason they had to get rid of their fifth dog that they had (his is currently sleeping on my couch right now. we got him from them in november of last year. the sweetest carolina dogi 've ever met) my friends were not sure if they could sue on account we are in canada and they are in the us. (we dont know much about laws LOL)

I can't really help you any much than that as I'm in Australia and we have never purchased a dog internationally but I know within Australia people have sued for the same reason and won.
Are they new to the dog show world? Or have they been in it for a while? It's a pretty scary place with lawsuits for dogs and getting people sued for slander and actual fights between people at dog shows! Craziness!

this is their first show dog. *they have two right now of the same breed. (alapha blue blooded bull dogs) the second one they got was from a different breeder *she was best of the litter* and she is super healthy and fits breed requirements to a t.. wow does that really happen in dog shows. i wanted to show my purebred and he fits show descriptions but is not recognised in canada so i dont know if i can or not

All dogs when bred by reputable breeders are on what's called 'limited' or 'main' register. Pet's are on limited register meaning they still have a registered name and the breeders prefix but they cannot be shown. Main register, they still have a name like the pet one's but they are allowed to be exhibited. It is just to make sure that 'inferior' dogs (and by inferior I mean have faults relating to the show ring, they are still great dogs) aren't shown under the breeders name, and earning them a reputation that they breed 'bad' dogs.

And oooooh yeah! I've seen many a catfight in my day! When you are with the right people and meet new friends it is a great social place but mess with the wrong people and it can turn ugly!

In my big explanation at the start I forgot to ask you if you got those sort of papers with the dog?

they never recieved papers for the male but the females papers did come in a few months ago. we think the male may not even be a purebred.
