Puppy - What breeds do you think he is?
Hi there, This is Loki, he is between 9 and 10 weeks old and was found under my garbage can a couple weeks ago. After putting up signs, walking him around the neighbourhood and calling the local shelters with no success he has become part of the family of three other dogs and one cat. I'm trying to figure out what he is. I am guessing Rottweiler/Lab, but some friends put out rott/chow or rott/shepard. Any thoughts?

If he was standing up I could give a more realistic guess, physical characteristics are more easily seen that way. Can you submit another pic of him standing ? From that angle would guess some rotty, maybe german shep.

tigerpurrss, it really is so difficult to determine mixes at such a young age. He definitely has rottie paws. The rest of him, well, we can all take a shot at guessing but they will all be guesses. He reminds me of the mystery grab bags you get at holiday parties! LOL Whatever he is, I got to tell you, he is one heck of a cute puppy! Just an adorable little guy. I am very thankful you and your family are such responsible people. I can't begin to imagine what might have happened to him if you hadn't found him. You are a caring and kind person. I wish there were more people like you in this world.

Here's a couple more pictures. He is 20lbs at 9-10 weeks! He has already learned sit, down and wait. I wipe every paw that comes in from the back yard (I'm in the middle of landscaping and there are a few muddy patches) and he jumps into my arms every time he comes in so his paws can be wiped. The nicest thing is how much my 3 year old basenji/pit/shepard mix Tasca is helping out by being a great role model of the commands he has learned. Neo is the 7 year old Lhasa Apso in one of photos and is determined to remain the man of the house.

I have never seen a basenji/pit/shepherd mix before. What a gorgeous dog! I love basenjis. All three dogs look happy & healthy. As for the puppy, you definitely see the Rottie in him. No question there. The additional mix could be a couple of breeds, which is why it is so difficult. His additional mix reminds me a bit of a Burnese Mountain Dog. I would be very surprised if that is it. You don't see those too much, especially as strays. In any event, he is going to be one big boy if he is already 20 pounds at 9/10 weeks old!

When is a puppy not a puppy anymore? [ 3 Answers ]

Our Lhasa is now 10 months old. As a puppy we have had food available pretty much at all times, but maybe he's getting past that now, and for his weight should maybe only be fed about a cup to a cup and a half of his dog meal a day. We have been using Wysong, by the way, and it seems to have a...
