puppy wakes up every hour at night to pee

4 Answers I have a 5 month old silky terrier. I had him sleeping in a dog pen before and he wouldn't whine till around 6am but there would be 2 or 3 Lee puddles and a poop. I decided to start crate training him to see if he will hold it for the night and wait till I take him outside in the morning. I feed him dinner around 5pm and he doesn't eat or drink anything after that. I take him out to Lee and poop 15 minutes after he eats and then take him out every hour or so after, and right before bed time. He goes everytime I take him out. He goes to sleep in the crate, usually go to bed around 11pm and he sleeps 2-3 hours then wakes up every hour after that to go out. I get up take him out, he owes and I put him back. He goes to sleep for an hour and wakes up again. He won't stop barking till I take him out. I have taken him to the vet and he doesn't have any health problems so I don't know what to do. I want to keep trying to house break him but waking up every hour is too much. if I wake up and sleep on the couch with him he will go right back to sleep with no problems but I don't want him to get used to that. What can I do so that he can sleep through the night and hold his urine for more then an hour or 2 at night? Oh and during the day I have been able to leave him in his pen for 4 hours and him not pee so I know he can hold it for at least that long. Help! I'm exhausted. |

| where is the crate located? Is it in your room? If not try putting the crate in your room. I know how difficult it is to sleep through screaming and crying, but you might have to just suck it up and do it. IGNORE HIM... Try putting him in his crate during the day instead of the play pen. He still is able to go pee if he is in the play pen. I'm sorry for your loss of sleep, and unfortunately it'll only get worse before it gets better. But the best remedy for this is to ignore him. Start doing this during the day and work your way into the evening and night time. Some tips for the crate.. make sure its very small since he is just a little guy. A cat crate would work great. Put a blanket in there that is easy to clean. Cover the crate with a towel. Sometimes if they cant see everything, they're quieter. Sometimes with my puppies that I house train, and I know they are able to hold it.. I might tap on the crate and tell them "quiet" in a very firm voice. House training is a bit tricky... you have to push them to start holding it. If you continue to baby them and take them out every time they cry, than they will never learn how to hold their bladder. He should be able to make it over night just fine. Its time to enforce it. | ||||

| That makes things a bit tricky. Does he pee first than cry? Or cry than pee? I'm assuming he cries than pees after no one takes him out. I suggest to start crate training during the day when you're home. Did the vet do a physical on him? Or did he have a urinalysis done? Him not being able to hold it for a long period of time could be a bladder infection or stones.. Stones are rare in puppies, but I have seen them in younger dogs than yours. Both would give him the want and sensation of needing to pee all the time. | ||||

| The vet did a physical, checked his kidneys and bladder and did urinalysis. Gave antibiotics a few months ago because some numbers were low but they went back to normal when I watched what he drank. I will try getting a smaller crate and putting it in my room at night, and also put him in during the day and see if that helps. Hopefully he gets used to the crate sooner then later. | ||||
