My puppy has parvo its been 6 days how long will this last?
Hi my puppy is at around 12lbs now he has the parvo virus he has made it through 6 days of this I am giving him pedialyte emergen-c and oatmeal along with anti biotics and anti vommiting pills he hasn't had a bowel movement for 6days now he's just sleeping a lot but finally started to retain some fluids I would give him orally along with oatmeal most places I have read say that usually a pup who lasts more than 5 days will make it so that put my hopes up how long does it take for a pup to get over this horrible disease?

Your puppy is at home? Is he under a vets care?

Only the vet can tell you whether your puppy has gotten through this horrible often fatal disease.

My puppy was at the vet for at least 6 weeks when he had Parvo (or it seemed that long)

Yes, it can take quite a long time for them to get over parvo, and the area and things around them can stay contagious for months, if not years.

To reiterate what Alty said, are they t the vets?
If it is only 6 days into the illness then they would usually still be under the vets care.

Do you have any other pets? Or just this pup?

Good luck, I am lucky to have never had parvo in my house but know of friends who have had to deal with it.

Sadly most vets won't allow puppies with parvo to stay at their clinic. Because it's so contagious it can be a hazard to the other animals in their care.

Still, a vet should be involved in the care of this puppy. If not a visit to the vets, then a home visit (most of the vets in my area will do this for animals with highly contagious illnesses).

Either way, pup is not in the clear yet. If he/she does survive, there can be lasting complications for the rest of his/her life.

I must have had a good (or dumb) vet, although it was 19 years ago. They quarantined Winnie right away and when we came to visit had to step in bleach on the way in and on the way out. Well worth it.:)
Edit: but couldn't train his butt afterward, because he was so used to being pampered for so long.

JD, some vets will take them in, it depends on the clinic and the space.

Most smaller clinics don't have the room to quarantine an animal, so they send the dog home with the proper meds etc.

It's sad, most dogs don't have much of a chance against this disease as it is, they definitely need to be in the care of a vet.
