Relax, most of the humping is more about status and rank than sex. Puppies move quick. I didn't plan it that way, but I once photographed about a 2 month old humping another 2 month old. When we get together, one of the worst dogs about humping another one has always been my Aster, retired as a dog guide a year ago at 10.

At 5 months old, their testicles are descending, hormones raging, and status becoming more important. In most cases it is best to give the dog a mild correction. Most vets like to wait until about 6 months to neuter them.

    Hi
I agree with Labman. It's usually more about hormones starting to go, and about status and rank.
Many vets are safely neutering at younger ages now - we neuter as early as 4 months. The sooner, the better. Don't want to take any chances.
Also, the sooner you neuter them, the less chance of prostate disease/cancer later in life. Is good all around to neuter them early.
    :)

Neutering is maybe a little nicer term than castration, surgical removal of the testicles. Modern vets use anesthesia, so there is little pain. It reduces many undesirable behaviors, including desperate attempts to get loose if there is a female in her fertile season in the neighborhood or even up wind for miles. It also greatly reduces chances of cancer later in life. It is the best thing for all but select breeding stock. It also reduces the slaughter of unwanted dogs at the shelters.
