Help!

I have a lovely golden retreiver who we adopted this last July. He is about 3 years old and the best dog ever in every way except this new peeing inside thing. It happens when we are home, and he has access to outside, or has just been outside, when he will go into another room and pee. His one consistant thing he does is he pees on rugs or carpets. If we remove the carpet to clean a previously peed on spot, he does it a another carpet. What can be happening with him, and what can I do to get him to stop this annoying behavior? He is usually eager to please, and there is no guilty behavior when he does this. I think he gets plenty of attention and exercise. Please help.

It is hard to say what is going on in those furry heads some times for even the most experienced. If the rooms aren't used much, he may figure they are as good as outside. It could be a plea for attention. It is hard to give some Goldens all the attention they crave. Does he have access to the rooms when you aren't there and not pee in them until you come? I would start out reducing his access to the rooms, close the door, a baby gate, etc. Even a short chain to your computer desk to make sure he doesn't wonder off.

Too intense a cleaning may be counterproductive. Get it clean enough you can't smell it, but he still can, and may be he will decide he has claimed it and quit. Could be that is why he so carefully does carpet. I know, I know all the books say you must eliminate every last trace. Have you been doing it, and it isn't working? Or maybe you haven't been. If not, some vinegar or enzyme product is worth a try. People with real dog experience realize that what works with some dogs, doesn't with others.

Post back with some details on when you aren't there and if he is neutered. It may give me some more ideas.

I do agree with what works with some dogs doesn't work with others. Like humans, they are different somewhat.
I love Golden Retreivers and all dogs, for that matter!
Has he been drinking more water than usual?
I would schedule a Vet appointment, it could possibly be a Urinary Tract Infection.
I would also take him outside whenever you think it might be time, and give him a treat whenever he does go outside.
As another said, White Distilled Vinegar will get the smell out. Just pour a little on the place, let it soak for a couple of minutes, then pat dry with paper towels.
I do wish you good luck, and hang in there. I would definitely visit the Vet, just to be sure nothing medically is wrong.

The other guys are right about the smell and all and the vinegar. Dudes just marking his territory. Its a dog thing. My male chiuaua pees on my step moms grill and our female black labs dog house all the time.
