Needing Direction: My son (15) and I picked up a puppy (Hound/Sharpee Mix) from the SPCA on Saturday @ 3:30pm - we did not even get home and coming down my hill the puppy threw up blood, luckily I have a vet on my street - I pulled into her driveway and had her look at the puppy. She informed me that the puppy may have Parvo, which I never heard of. She explained quickly to me about it and told me not to have the puppy near my other animals (6yrs Sam/Golden Retriever (he was with us), 4yrs Ella Blue/Black Lab and 16yrs Groucho/Cat/Mixed. I did not bring the puppy in my house - she was on the porch. I kept the other animals away from her. The puppy then had blood in her stool, which was in our yard - I bleached the area. I for the next 5 hours between calling and going to the SPCA/Vet Hospital to see who was going to help this puppy. I got a hold of the SPCA Director and he told me to bring the puppy to the emergency vet clinic and the SPCA would pay for it. The puppy progressed at the clinic for 36hrs and on Monday the SPCA picked her up and brought her back to the SPCA to recover thoroughly. The puppy is in isolation, taken off IV on Tuesday and is being given antibiotics (she is eating/drinking/and going to the bathroom normally). My question: Can I take this puppy home without infecting my other animals (who are all up to date with all shots) and/or my house (I bleached clothes, sheet that was in contact with the puppy on Saturday? What are the chances of this puppy being happy and healthy? Thank you.

He can get better, hopefully they caught it early, which they probably did if they didn't even catch it before you took him, it could have been his first signs of it. As long as he is now isolated and they can observe him. Hopefully he will come through it no problem. Its a good thing all your other animals have had there shots, and you did the right thing by cleaning and disinfecting everything. I wouldn't bring him home right away, wait till the vet clears him. You have to make sure he is over it, that would be the best thing, not only that but parvo really stinks. It has the worst smell you can't imagine. I hope your baby will come through it all just fine. And give you my respect for adopting from the SPCA!

The puppy had no smell at all during the vomiting and in the stool. I just called the SPCA - the puppy is still in isolation per the person that answered the phone. The vet will call me back. When can I, personally know when the puppy is okay (eating, drinking, happy, etc) to bring her home? I'm a little weary as the adopted puppy was sick (to me she looked sad, lonely scared, her food was not eaten) maybe I should have known but I just thought she was sad/lonely/scared. The attendant at the SPCA did tell me the puppy had diarrhea and it's hard to believe that no blood was in the stool.

Thank you for the information. Quite informative. I'm leary about taking the puppy home (she will be in quarantine for another couple of days and then to a foster home for about two weeks) and then I can decide if I want the puppy back - what an experience (you try to do a good thing and get a puppy from the SPCA for the first time and parvo happens. Not at all a good experience Now, I'm leary about taking the puppy back. I was exhausted from the experience, then mad, then sad, etc. I know the SPCA tries to save a lot of animals but it's hard to believe no one knew this puppy had parvo as the attendant told me twice the puppy had diarrhea. I'll never know - just move on from here.

I want to visit the puppy but the SPCA says I'm not able to - the Director of the SPCA just called me and stated that the puppy is eating, drinking, urinating and moving her bowels normally but keeping her another day or two in quarantine. Since yesterday, they have admitted another puppy to quarntine for parvo. The SPCA closed the puppy room - isolating all puppies (no puppies in and no puppies out) - I went there yesterday just to make sure they isolated all those puppies and no puppies were coming in or out. Thank you for all of your information as this virus was unknown to me.
