Neutering a 2 year old lab
I have a 2 year old lab that hasn't been neutered.

I am going to fix him next month because I want to prevent him from breeding, but I would also like him to be more mellow.

Someone told me that it is too late for him to change his behavior, even if I neuter him.

    Is this true?

I will fix him no matter what but I do want to start taking him to the beach again, and I want to make sure he is not going to attack a smaller dog.

    Thanks
    William Scott

I believe that neutering him will make him more mellow. It will not happen at first but in a couple of months when his testosterone levels have gone down then you should see a change in him. But don't thnk it will change everything.
You may need to consult with a trainer to help you with his aggression toward small dogs.

I think it is too late to neuter. If you really want to prevent him from breeding talk to your vet first.

It is never too late to neuter an animal. Remember, Labs are working dogs. As suck they are very active and needs lots of space to play. IF they do not get enough exercise you will soon find a lot of boredom behavior. Digging, tearing shrubs out, tearing fences down things like that. They are not bad dogs, just bored. Remember a bored dog is a destructive dog. Also Labs are puppies until about age 8. They can be a hoot to own, but they usually take a lot of patience and work to get a good one.

Neutering is more effective in younger dogs just because it prevents some behaviors from developing--less aggression, less marking behavior and so on. It certainly is not too late to neuter him and it may very well mellow him out some. It won't change his basic personality. I agree with bushg that he may also need some professional help if he has a problem with other dogs.

I have also been told it would do nothing to change my hyper Siberian Husky (I got him neutered last year when he was 2), but even when we went to get the stitches taken out 10 days after he was neutered the vets told me there was a huge difference in him. I don't think it would make him less aggressive towards little dogs however.
