Introducingan alpha type puppy to non alpha neutered male adult
I have a8 week old german shepard pup and am introducing her to a household with a 6yr old whetland terrier (popeye) who has always been the submissive dog with our other dogs - the last alpha passed several months ago. Popeye at first just stayed on my bed and would show his teeth and growl when the puppy did more than just walk by but would interact a tiny bit in the backyard. Now he comes out to the living room and the puppy is getting more aggressive... barking and laying down then barking standing up.. she is trying everything to engage pops but nothing is working. Popeye also lets her eat out of his dish and lay on his bed. We pay tons of attention to pops but still very little interaction and no playing. Pops appears to not want to stand up and be alpha but not to be a playmate either. We got this pup because we all missed having a second dog... including pops, or so we thought.
Need some help with getting these two to interact/play. Pup is crated at night which gives pops a chgance to get his 1 on 1 with his people, but I think if he would break down and play they would have a great time... please help mary

I was in the same situation. Our family just adopted a beagle puppy in October. At first the other two dogs (13 year old lab and 7 year old border collie) didn't like having a new pup in the house. Our 7 year old Jasper growled at him and even bit him once. After around a month they started getting use to each other and now they're the best of friends.

Just give it some time, make sure that Pops knows he's loved and show the puppy his place in the family. If he eats out of Pops bowl, move the bowl to where he can't get it, tell him no, push him to the side and let Pops get to his food. Perhaps feeding them in different rooms will help, we had to do that. Also, Pops bed is his. Get your puppy his own bed and teach him that it's his.

Above all, give it time. The puppy is still young, playful and that can be hard on a older dog. I'm sure that it will work out, most times it does.

Good luck and congrats on your new addition. :)
