How many fleas does a dog have?
I just brought our new cocker spaniel pup home today, from a farm, and she is riddled with fleas. So far I have seen about 20 come off her and they are still clearly visible crawling in her fur. We have treated her with drops and put her in the shed to sleep and also sprayed in the house where she has been. How long will it be till they have gone off her and she can come back indoors? How many fleas will be on her? Are we now in a cycle that is hard to break so that when she comes back inside the ones that are in the house will jump on her again? I feel like taking her back as we had a cat flea infestation before and it was unbearable. We don't have cats anymore, just another dog, who has never ever suffered with fleas.

If there are any fleas in bedding or on the carpet or in sofa cushions, they will jump onto the dog. The best thing to do would be to check with your vet as to how to get them off her, totally fumigate the inside of the house, then bring her inside to keep her safe. If she's outside, she will just pick up more. The fleas in the shed and in the house will attack and live on people and other animals, so best to get rid of them completely.

That poor pup must be miserable! How old is she? (You have to be careful if she's still real young.) Fleas and ticks can kill small animals, don't forget. Please be kind-hearted and help the pup survive this.

And please get her spayed when she's six months old or so.

Wash in cold water and use dawn dish soap to remove the fleas.

Depending on the type of medicine you got will depend on how long it takes. Typically the treatment is instant and within 24 hours the fleas will all be gone.

Fleas are not what you have to worry about.. Flea dirty (poop) is what you need to worry about. It can build up and be very uncomfortable for the dog.

Maybe contact a groomer and see what you can do. But washing in cold water with dawn dish soap will have those bugs fall off asap.

Also.. an FYI, any over the counter medications such as Zone are no good. You need to get a medicine appropriate for your pups age. I like Advantage. Its $50, but takes care of 3 months.

Also, since your pup was infested with fleas, I'm sure your pup has some other friends also. Take her to the vet for a once over and probably worming.

I know your pup is icky right now, but secluding to a dark shed isn't a good idea. Put her in a crate in the kitchen or mud room. Putting a puppy in a shed is just not a good idea and will create separation anxiety and other types of anxiety. And yes, it only takes one or two times for those nearly impossible to fix behaviors to surface.

    Good luck to you.

How old is the puppy and where did you get the 'drops' that you used on her?

Since you have been through one infestation, you should be familiar with the need to thoroughly treat the environment as well as the pet. This thread from the Pest Control forum should provide information that will help:

    https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/pest-c...pt-386490.html

The information that came with the treatment you used should give you an idea of how quickly if will work and how effective it should be. If it doesn't the company's website should.
