how long can I give my dog benadryl for calming down?
    Hello,

My Lasapoo Max has a fractured hip and I give him 1/2 a benadryl while I am at home all day due to the fact he gets excited. And he ends up on his back legs and I don't want him to do this. So I was wondering how long can I give my puppy 2x a day a 1/2 benadryl 2-3 times a week?

Did you get permission from your vet to do this?

When my dog had ligaments repaired in his leg, the vets prescribed a pain killer which "calmed" him down as well. You shold speak to your vet when it comes to prolonged use of any medication. Especially human medication.

It won't hurt him, it is milder than most pain killers that you can get from the vets, a pet can go on benyral for allegries daily forever so 2 to 3 weeks for pain management is fine.

There is probably a better solution than benadryl, talk to your vet!

My vet said to give him benadryl to calm him. A half a pill of it to calm him. Just wanted to know how other dogs did on this.

Benadryl doesn't affect my dogs at all, other than to calm their itching for an hour or so. Yes, benadryl is prescribed by vets people. Believe me, I just spent over $300 at the vet only to find that I have to give them benadryl.

For allegries my vets tells me to use generic Claritin. We house foster Golden Retrievers and hot spots are very common, claritin is a charm and does not put them to sleep and it $20 for 6 months at Sam's or Costco.

Don't use Benedryl. If you need your dog to just relax for a couple of hours while you're gone, use Melatonin. It doesn't drug them out, just lets them relax. And its all natural. Benadryl can't be healthy long term.
