Is there a house hold item that can be used to get rid of urine scent in carpets?

Check with a janitorial supply store. They sell an enzyme that when mixed with water and applied to the carpet will "eat" the urine. Depending on the penetration of the urine, that area of the carpet may have to be soaked with the enzyme for about 24 hours.
