Hello!

Trinkett went in for her dental yesterday, and I am supposed to give her amoxicillin for the next few days. The vet said that I should put it in some bread or peanut butter and give it to her. However, she didn't say if I should put the whole capsule in, or crack it open and just put the drug in the food. Anyone have any tips?

my dogs have had to take many pills i found they best way is to get a peice of hot dog put the whole pill in it then give it to them...they think it is a little treat and swallow it before the pill gets out they never even know its there!! if that doesnt work cover it in butter and when you put it in the dogs mouth shut it and rug down its throat it should make the dog swallow

I find the trying to disguise pills as more bother than it is worth. Just place the pill as far back in the dogs throat as you can, hold its mouth shut, tilt the head up and rub the throat until it swallows. I have used that on many dogs. Some are just too good at finding pills and spitting them out. It isn't worth the fight.

You can also buy a pill popper tool.

Yep... I tried wrapping it in bread, and she happily chewed off the bread and spat the pill back out. I will try just getting her to swallow it, but remember the fun I have with the cats and that!

Also, last night I finally just sprinkled it on her food and she went ahead and ate it. However, I don't know if I should try that again, or if the amoxycillin needs to be protected by the capsule through the stomach in order to work correctly. Thankfully this is prophylactic treatment, so it's not quite as critical as if she were actually ill right now.

I like the pill popper. It is little stress on the dog and little stress on the owner.


I once had a horse that would eat around the pills that were smashed up with apple sauce...I swear animals are smarter than some people give them credit for.

Well, the hot dog trick seems to work the best. Although I gave her a few non-pilled pieces first, which was a good thing, since it took her a bit to figure out how to eat them. Unfortunately, she had her last remaining upper right molar removed in the dental, so she's having to cope with some new chewing issues.

try a piece of cheese break it up into about 3 or 4 pieces and wrap the pill in one of them give the first piece without the pill, then you can decide if the pill piece should be next but watch to be sure that the pill piece is downed by the dog, this works well with out dog.
