Daschund Hair Loss

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has encountered this before.... I have a 2 year old standard Daschund. This spring he started developing scabs on his belly. I thought maybe they were just fly bites, but he seems to have more of them now and some on his back. After the scab goes he ends up with a bald spot with the skin there is kind of blackish. I had him into the vet last week and they took scrapings but they didn't find mites. The vet suggested maybe doing a skin biopsy. I am also waiting for the fungal test results.

Has anyone ever encountered this before and what is the cause and solution? Thanks!

David

This is interesting. Since the vet did a skin scrape and didn't find demodex. I would wait on the DTM (fungal analysis). I have the same problem w/ one of my pups. At one point they all had bumps on them, I thought it was from being outside when I kept them up at my work for a few days. Maybe just bites from something. So I had one of the doctors up there look at them and he said it was a skin infection and prescribed Simplicef which is to treat skin infections. The other pups did real well with it. One pup still has them on him though, one bump on his head and then the others on his hocks which look like scabs from a scrape. So I had the other dr look at him again and all he could think of was cutaneous histiocytomas (which is one of my posts) that look like they are healing. He said they would go away. He said we could do a skin biopsy but I said I'd rather try the antibiotics. So he prescribed Clavamox (Amoxicillin). I've seen a very small improvement (it's only been a few days). We did a DTM on him also. So I would wait on the fungal analysis and see what that has to say and if it's negative ask him about putting him on Simplicef and talk to him about the Clavamox before doing a biopsy. I'd like to see what the result is of your dashhound! Let me know.
