My daughter is going to breed her doxie and wants to give me a pup, (as my cockapoo is getting old). I have never had a dog this small before, oh it is a miniture doxie. I keep noticeing in the threads that doxies have back problems, is there anything else I should know. I will get the pup fixed!!!!!!!

Just wondering has your daughter done gentic testing on her dog she is going to beed?
Has the father been tested? These things are pretty important when breeding as many problems are genetic/hereditary.

Has she bred dogs before?

I personally haven't had dacshunds but here is some general info I know about them:

They are notorious diggers who can be wary of stranger. They are extrememly loyal to their masters.

The biggest health concern is intervertebral disc disease which affects their spine. They can also have issues with their patellas and deafness.

They were originally bred to help hunt badgers..

Our Vet is helping her out. He is so great our office visit is only $19! Tom (the vet) is wealthly and feels that the animals schould come first. His bed side manner with animals is wonderful, now people on the other hand. I am sure you know what I mean. This is going to get long sorry. Tom set up the male and everything, we are just waiting for Tinkerbell to go into heat. She has been set up with prenatal visits, I have never heard of doing that with an animal before. I quess you learn something new every day. Tom is great with us because he knows that with my family the animals health is just as important as our health. Tom cried just as hard as we did when we had to let my Buddy go to rainbow valley.
Same with our Snoopy dog. It was hard one us all because Snoopy passed then Buddy all within 2 months of each other. Tom was very worried about my little Annie losing her bud's.
But I have had lots of kids around and that has helped so much. I owe a lot of parents for lwetting me borrow thier kids for Annie. Tom thinks one of the puppies will be a good fit for me, as I will be able to take a small dog more places. I hope I answered some of your questions. Thanks for the link I will check it out.

Shaz I checked out the site thank you very much. Now I know why my vet thinks we would be a good match. My duaghter is only letting her female have one litter. Then it's off to get spayed.

If she is positive that is what she wants to do.
There are a lot of dachshunds in shelters at the moment so it's a little sad when someone who isn't a registered breeder has a litter.
Her choice though.

Sounds like you have a very good vet It takes so long to find one that you really trust and you know cares more about the animals than money.

Dogzonline.com.au is basically Australias dog hub.. all the Aussie breeders are registered on there and there is a ton of info.

Auntswee. I would usually get very harsh with you but you sound like a very nice person and you obviously love your pets, so I'm going to tone down mean Alty, give you some facts and then hope that we can have a discussion before you go ahead with breeding this pup.

I'm very much against none professional breeders breeding their dogs. Here are a few reasons why.

1. Without genetic testing (which is quite expensive) you are potentially handing down many undesirable traits and health defects to the puppies.

2. Alot of dogs die giving birth and most times each litter has at least on fatality if not more. You take a huge risk that you will lose the female that you are breeding and all the pups to boot.

3. There are millions (yes, millions) of dogs put to sleep every year. The reason why? There are simply not enough homes out there for all the dogs being bred. I know you think "but I'm only having one litter" but that's what everyone thinks. It's like thy whole "I'm only throwing one candy wrapper on the floor, so I'm not causing pollution" but if everyone thought the same way, we'd be covered in candy wrappers. Darn, that sounded good in my head.

There are so many other reasons not to do this but I think you get where I'm going with this.

There are so many dogs in shelters right now waiting for their forever home but the majority of them will not find it, they will be walked down that lonely corridor into the cold room and euthanized. I've witnessed it many times and it never stops breaking my heart. These are perfectly healthy dogs, but there are so many puppy's out there that they have to compete with, and they can't win.

Please, consider a shelter dog, consider not breeding this doxie.

If you really are set on that breed I'd be more then happy to help you find a shelter that has that breed or a legitimate breeder in your area. Please give it some thought. I could post videos, but they aren't pleasant viewing and I usually leave them as a last resort to try to discourage someone from breeding.

Our shelter will soon be getting around 40 plus smaller breed dogs that were recently rescued from a puppy mill in Edmonton, these are the smaller breeds available right now but on any given day there are small breeds and puppy's available for adoption. Also, there are many breed specific shelters all over the world, so I can help you find that mini doxie, it's just a matter of time and patience which I am more than willing to devote if you choose to do this.

I am currantly trying to talk her out of breeding her. My husband was hit the hardest when our other dogs died this year,( I was hit really hard as the one was my seizure dog). He has said No more dogs but I really need one that will alert me when a seizure is going to start. Our vet said a doxie would be great as they are very in tune with their human companions. I don't like the word owner. Can a rescue doxie rebond with another person?

I just decided to tell my daughter that if she really wants to help me out and get me a dog. She can take me to our local shelter or check with our vet for animal that would be right for me. Our vet gets older animals that people can't keep for one reason or another all the time. I really don't need the sleepless puppy stage at this point in time.

I know the idea of breeding a litter of adorable little puppies seems great but the reality is, if you get 6 puppies that means 6 puppies in a shelter are going to die.
Sad thought really.
