    Dog Purging
Hello. Im writing about my fathers Golden Retriever dog. He is about 5 years old. Lately when he's been eating he will immediately bring up his food. My dad has noted that its not whether the dog eats it fast or not. We feel its an upset stomach or just a reaction to food or his environment... any suggestions?

There is an easy fix to eating too fast, typical of Goldens. If you feel that isn't the problem, then better see the vet.

You can either spread the food out , or put big rocks in the dish. Either way, the dog can't grab one big mouth full after another.

Is your Golden running around or exercising immediately prior to or after eating? Is it very hot where you live? These things can be causing the problem. I would follow labman's advice regarding slowing down his eating. In general it is always better for them to eat at a slower pace. If your dog is very active or if he is outside in the heat, make sure you give him a half hour cool down (quiet/lie down/shade) period inside prior to feeding him. After he eats, keep him inactive for an hour. Do not let him run around or go out into the heat.

Another concern is, what are you feeding him? Is he getting table scraps? If you are consistently feeding him people food that is very rich or high in fat, it is time to stop and just keep him on his dog chow. It would also be time to make an appointment with your vet. Dogs are prone to the same issues we are when we eat the wrong foods. He could have an inflammed pancrease. Just cutting out the people food will help, but this issue would most definitely require a vet visit for a complete health check/medication.

If nothing above is applicable, you are going to have to start figuring out what has changed in your home or outside. He may be eating something that he shouldn't be if you aren't watching him closely. He might have an obstruction from eating the wrong thing. If the solution isn't a simple one such as the weather or exercise, and this problem has been occurring for more than a couple of days, it is time to take him into the vet for a complete health check.
