Dog is not sick but keeps vomiting
I have a two and a half year old jack russell. For the past few months he keeps vomiting. Not a lot, just usually once or twice a week. It seems to happen at random, it's not after just eating or anythihng that I can figure out. He isn't sick at all - he is his usual hyper, energetic bouncy self. At first I thought it was because he was eating things he wasn't supposed to - it seemed to start when I would catch him eating the ashes and coals in the fireplace or eating the fake grass in my plastic potted tree, but he hasn't done any of that in a long long time, but the random vomiting continues. Could this be the result of worms or something like that?

I have a dasch/chiua mix, and if you read my postings you will see how much I have struggled with this with her. Many trips to the vet, many test, many treatments, and still we have no answer. Missy is almost 2 years old, and we have had this problem for most of her life. We too thought maybe she had gotten into things, and maybe once or twice she did, however not all the time. We tested for worms, once the test came back false, yet I could actually see the worms in her stool, so we treated. She randomly vomits, usually at night, but not always. (One vet told us to break up her meals over the day so she never has an empty stomach) Then a few months ago, the mucus/bloody poop started, and it too, comes and goes. We have switched her diet to prescription diet food, we have tried the bland cottage cheese and rice, been on many rounds of antibiotics, and for a few weeks it all seems to work. Then it just starts up again. Yesterday Missy had a bowel movement that was so bloody, I thought for sure this was it, she was VERY ill. She was also burping, and wanting to vomit, so we gave her some anti-vomit medications (that her vet has me keep at home, this is how much she does this) and some pepcid (yes you can give a dog pepcid but always make sure how much, and if your vet agrees) and she calmed down some. I have chosen to do a colonoscopy, and endoscopy with Missy, because I really need to know what is wrong. It could be as simple as irritable bowel, or as serious as Cancer. A food allergy has also been mentioned. I know it's expensive and I will go into credit card debt to do this, but for piece of mind I have to. I have not found many other users whose pets seem to have this problem, and I really wish I could be of more help to you, but I am as baffled as you are! Most days she plays, runs, etc and acts totally normal, even when she is vomiting, then the next week, she looks sad, gloomy, and is sick. I suggested this earlier, to a user, and may I also suggest to you, look into pet insurance, (I am as we speak and hope that since it's a pre existing condition I will still be considered) as it can really help with the expense. I will keep you posted as I learn more with my Missy girl.

From my experience with my dogs if they do not eat their 2 meals a day. I think it may be from their stomach getting too empty so I split their food into 2 small morning and evening meals. I have small breed dogs as well, otherwise they are healthy and active.

None of this really fits my dog though. His stool is always perfectly fine (whatever the "perfect" poo is) and when he does vomit - his behavior does not change - he does not act/look/sound sick - he simply vomits, then get's on with his nomal playing. His eating habits haven't changed, nor his diet. I have fed him Purina Beneful nearly since I first got him last April. Also his vomit is always clean, meaning it's just a small amount of mucusey bile, but there's never any other substance in it. He doesn't burp either. Whenever this happens, his stomach will just start convulsing, he'll gag out some bile, and go about his business as if nothing had happened.

I'm also starting to wonder if this is somehow just seasonal. I am starting to remember that this happened a bit when I first got him back in April. Then when it was summer and he got to go play outside all day, it never happeend. Then winter came and he was stuck indoors all day long and it started happening again. So Maybe I'll see if it goes away again when spring comes and he get's to start playing outside.

Did you ever find out what was the matter with your dog? My dog is doing the Same thing. And my dog is half jack russell!! I'm to the point I put the first few times off because it happened so infrequently but it all of a sudden seems MUCH more frequent. I'm going to call the vet tomorrow I was just curious what you found out from your experience.

    hi guys,

have u guys figured out what is wrong with your dog yet? My silky terrier seems to have the same problems n it has been 2 weeks. Besides the random vomiting, she eats, bark, play and poo normally. I have visited the vet 3 times, already done x-ray and blood test and nothing found. She is on gastritis medicine now but still vomit like once a day. Any info u can provide based on your vet's advice?

Hi Leeiva, this is a really old thread, and it doesn't look like the OP has been back. You should start your own thread. You will get more responses that way.

    Thanks :)
