What's your guys take on Hollistick dog food compared to commercial brands? Specificly Purina. In the town that I live in, there is a factory that makes Purina, and one that makes holistick food. The one that produces the commerical brand say that hollistick food can be good, but they would NEVER recomend it, as it only has meat product and dogs need to have grains and vegitables, and of Course the Hollistick compnay says that the commerical brand is all "garbage" for lack of better words. And their dog food is made from Grade A Canadian chicken brest, good enugh for any human to eat. Now as for price differences we are looking at- Hollistick $80 for a big bag (once your purchase 12 you get one free), lasts a little over a month. Purina $13 for the seccond largest bag, lasts a month. Both claim to have 100% of the dogs daily nutrients. I also feed my dog organ meet. I BBQ liver, cut it up in chunks and freeze. Vet says it's better then brushing their teeth, and is a great treat. I also do this with hearts and kidneys. I also boil soup merrow bones and she will get 2 a week. Sorry if it is too much info LOL.
I worked for a vet clinic for quite some time. Of course we always recommended Iams or Science Diet, but we also told clients that Purina is a very good food. The cheaper brands like Alpo or Pedigree have a high fat content. Purina may not be as expensive as other brands but is still considered a good food. Maybe its vet specific but that is what the vets I worked for said.
A lot of people say that Purina isn't much chop but I personally don't mind it... Supercoat dry is all natural and mid-range in regards to price.
Mine get a combination of both, they get holistic dry food and just a branded canned wet food.
Tried experimenting with home-made foods and holistic wet but they refused to eat it.
I much prefer anything natural over foods with preservatives as I have had a lot of trouble with one of mines allergies caused by branded food, beef is another thing he just can't seem to tolerate.

I didn't think that Holistic was so much Generic, Holistic Dog Food contains a combination of high-grade meats, ground bones and whole grains.The meats used in Holistic Dog Food are considered table meat, which means it is meat that you would eat yourself. You wouldn't find any meat by-products in Holistic Dog Food, as you will in most commercial dog food. You probablly already knew that...
There are many manufacturers who now create these Holistic Dog Foods, but generally (and by opinion only) are a better grade then commercial dog foods such as Purina and Iams ect...
Yesterday i took my dog to the vet, and I kind of got the guilt trip for not feeding her their brand, but just wanted to get some other experts opinions. And get this, for lady's weight (65lbs) she would require 6 1/2 cups of purina a day compared to 2-3 cups of the Vet brand food! yi yi yi what's a girl to do??!

Wow - is that ever the truth! I get practically held up to buy some special brand every time I walk into the Vet's office. My dogs are happy and healthy (and very large) and like what they presently eat. I have no plans to change but I often feel like I'm getting pressured.
(And I know what you mean about spelling - yesterday I typed something, went back and read it and didn't even understand what I had said!)
lol well at least I am not alone!! Lady seems to like the food she is getting, well no complaints as of yet. Pressured, well that's an understatement!!! I felt like I was being scolded for animal cruelty!
pff if they only knew! Her and my daughter eat like queens, and I get stuck with the old kraft dinner and hotdogs lol. Which by the way, hotdogs have more perservatives then commercial dog food!
What to feed your dog is a topic that can bring alot of opnions.There are so many brands to choose from. As long as your dog is healthy and has no adverse reaction to the food stay with what works. My vet never pushes a certain brand of food . He does stock one brand . He also never pushes one heartworm or flea tick product over the other. He gives the benifits of them and leaves the choice to you. I would tell my vet or his staff to back off on pushing a food.
Thanks. And I totally agree, it seems like they only really push the dog food for some reason, not sure if it is commision based or what. Every thing else they are completly open to. I am a little to shy to tell them to "back off" I just listen and politly take the brochures, tell them I need to research and leave it at that. lol. Maybe they think I havn't decided and thats why they become so pushy, I guess I will have to suck it up, and tell them I am going to stick with the brand I am useing.
