My Pit bull is also bleeding from the penial staff area. I have taken him to two vets, and niether can figure it out. I guarantee it has nothing to do with the diet of the dog. We have had xray's done, and the prostate, bladder, and colon all look ok. The vet even said that the prostate felt normal. It only happens when he gets "excited" and "engorged."

If anyone really has a realitively close explainantion-please help me.

My dog also has yeast ear infections, and it has nothing to do with the food he eats. It is simply a genetic allergy that are relative in Staffordshires, and Bull terrier type animals. Chephalexin is a good antibiotic for that.

Prostate hypertrophy- Basically an intact male who is sexually frustrated due to females in heat. A male can smell females 2-3 miles away, so it doesn't have to be around the neighborhood even.

I never said food would solve or cure bleeding from the penis. However, I know if your dog has a food allergy changing food to the correct food would help. That is scientifically proven. It doesn't matter if his allergy is genetic or not.
If it is an inhalent allergy of course food wouldnt help it.

If your dog is eatting a Lamb based diet change him to beef or a fish based food. The lamb is considered a hot damp food which only aggrevates ear problems.

Actually I am very, very familar with that breed as the practice I work at was based on this and other pit breeds!

Western medicine puts band-aids on problems. Like steroids which is over used cause Cushing's. Also, your dog may develop an intolerance to one antibiotic if used constantly. While Ceph works very well has your vet combined it with SMZ's.

Why is it that he bleed continuosly? Weeks at end. I find it hard to believe that it is because a female is in heat. If that is the case, why now, and not in years before? What do you suggest? Let my dog mate? Isn't blood a sperm killer?

My dog just recently started getting yeast infections. I have kept him on the same diet since he was a pup. The infections have not come back, and once off the meds, they do.

And knowing I am not a Vet myself, why would you ask me if my vet has combined Ceph with SMZ? I am not aware of this acronym. Is it a steroid? And what is Cushings?

I think that your expectations of this forum are a bit high. The tone of your reply is a little bit 'snippy'. This forum is FREE. The advice is FREE. doggie _poopie was VERY helpful in her suggestions to you on what might be the problem. She admits that she is NOT a vet, but still has a lot of knowledge to share that could be helpful for your pet.

The bottom line here is that you should rely on your vet's diagnosis. It's awfully difficult to determine your pet's illness based solely on your descriptions online. I realize that you have taken him to 2 vets with no diagnosis...perhaps you should think about a third vet's opinion?

If this is really a serious problem, I sincerely doubt that 2 veterinarians would send you and your dog away without at least a referral to another vet, perhaps a specialist. I've said it in another thread: I have NEVER heard of a veterinarian that could not reach a conclusion on a diagnosis.

All very excellent questions! While I can not say exactly what is wrong with your dog ( I'm not a vet) it was just a thought.
I am sorry about SMZ. It is a drug refered to as SMZ TMP is really SULFONAMIDES AND TRIMETHOPRIM.
Next sorry if I was a bit snippy, however when you posted what you did and the wrath one certain individual has posted regarding diet, I admit I was on edge. Again, I do apologize for that.
Now allergies and ear problems are due to a lack of toleration to certain proteins or inhalents. While, your dog may be fine for years on a certain food over time the tolerance level with decrease once he reaches the threshold. And boom! I am only giving advice for what works at our vet clinic, what works for other breeds with similar problems or issues.

I am sorry about the answers you are getting here. If my dog had a problem even the second vet wasn't solving, I would be desperately looking for help too. I am active on a number of sites, and don't know where you would find a good answer. And I can understand why you weren't interested in a bunch of junk science diet recommendations. I don't think this thread is a good place to further debate diet.

Stick around, with any luck the diet thing will blow over. We had a big mess on another site I frequent last summer. The administrator locked the thread and forbid starting a new one on the subject for 30 days. By that time the trouble makers had moved on. We have another vet tech here that I think has a Staffie. Maybe when the shrapnel dies down, she will come out.
