I had no idea what i got myself into, I love dogs and have had only great experiences with my dogs in my past, so when i decided to buy a mini dash. from a pet store ( which I regret) the dog is turning out to be a retard! an imbred. It is over a year old and still isn't house train, I know I followed all the housetraing help, I even read the monks of new skeet books and I've tried command words, praising, rewards, crating, spanking, changed my tone with my voice,... everything, THE dog still poos and pees in my house! I have peer dog lovers who say the daschund is the worst dog to house break, because there so imbred and stubborn, It's like my dog forgets. I tell him to go lie down in his bed and stay, he'll listen for 10 mins and than get up and start running around, I can't take it! does anybody know how to house train an untrainable dog? because I'm this close of buying an electric collar. OH, and he always runs out of the yard. Every time i let him out in the backyard he finds a way out and runs all through the neighbors yards. Help how can I teach him to stay in the yard. I hate to see anybody give up their dog. Perhaps it might be best in this case, but not to just anybody. I think the dog needs to go to a rescue. It needs to be taken into a foster home to be retrained as necessary and placed in the right home for it. You may

It takes special skills to work with a dog that likely started out as most pet store dogs, poorly bred and poor early socialization. Nobody here, including me, has the training and experience to help. My experience is with well bred puppies, and I have extensive training in the proper early socialization. Early socialization is so important that my puppies come with a service dog tag permitting them to go in public places as soon as I get them at 7 weeks. We often stop for dinner at a restaurant on our way home with a 7 week old puppy.
It's been 5 days straight now and no accidents, Let me clear this up, I made this board to vent my frustration and anger towards this dog, and relieve my stress, I bought my dog from a bad pet store, a foolish impulse buy on my part, but I love my dog and would NEVER give him up, I came on here to vent and , yes there are days where I think my dog is a bloody RETARD and there are some days where I think he's the greatest thing on four legs,
You have to realize that my dog is extreamly messed up, he was removed from his mother before he was weened properly from her tit. My neighbor who has a dog says that she could tell right away he was removed to young because when my dog visits her dog, he goes straight to the other dogs tits and trys to nurse. I have a problematic dog, he has severe stress, insecurity issues and bad seperation anxiety, I made this board to vent and get support, not for someone to tell me to get rid of my dog.

I think what is really working with the house breaking, is that I removed the crate completely, he sleeps and stays in his bed at night beside my bed and I let him out in the backyard every couple of hours, for about 30-45 mins. to do his buisness. every time I let him outside I make him ring the bells I tied to the back door so he knows that this means to be let outside to do his buisness. I command him his potty word which is "GO PEE". He is spending more time outside to establish a comfort with outside, I even started feeding him outside on the porch. I've seen a huge improvement, no accidents for 5 days straight, knock on wood.
The only time i crate him now is when I leave the house for more than 2hours but less than 8hrs
I'm still struggling on his seperation anxiety thou, last night I left the house for a couple of hours and he destroyed the kitchen garbage, when I came home he knew he that it was wrong and he did something bad becasue he ran into his crate with his head down.
I can't even leave him in the car because it get's so bad he'll poop/pee in the car.
Jessyfay, it would be a good idea when you post on this forum if you are upset and want to rant, say you are ranting. Most people post to ask specific questions and look for constructive advice. If you let people know you are annoyed and need to vent, then they know how to take it and will respond accordingly. There a number of people who have done that and it can work quite well. Especially if you are looking for people to empathize with you.
I am glad that you love your dog and you have given him a home. It is unfortunate that you made an impulse buy and you have a dog that was bred so irresponsibly. With that in mind, with poorly bred dogs, it does take a lot more patience and can take a longer time to train them. You will eventually have some major victories, as you have stated with his ability not to soil inside the house. There will be small ones as well. He might always have certain problems. But, all you can do is try your best and be as patient as possible with this poor little guy. Have you taken a look at labman's advised reading list on the sticky at the top of the dog forum? There are some very good books there. I am sure you are familiar with at least a couple of them. If you have a Barnes & Noble, Bordersbooks, or any of the large chain bookstores in your area, you might want to go there. Buy a cup of coffee, sit down and look through some of those books he suggests. The great thing about those stores is that they leave you alone to enjoy your beverage and allow you to read as long as you want. I never stop reading and picking up training tips and suggestions. When something doesn't work for a particular problem, I will look for other ideas and test them, until I find something the dog will respond to.
One thing I will mention that deals directly with the problems you are having, your little guy doesn't know that he has done something wrong. If you don't actually catch them in the act, such as getting into the garbage, they don't make the connection. All they know is that every time you come home, at some point, you get annoyed. That is what he is responding to. He can sense it. He can sense the minute you are walking in the door that your frame of mind is not in a positive place. So, he will retreat to his crate.
For now, the best thing to do is to use that crate, even if you leave for only an hour. It will allow you the freedom of not worrying and puts him in a safe place when you are not around to monitor him. You might want to forgo the training in the truck for a while until you can get as good a handle as possible on the stuff that is going on at home. The other alternative is to get a little pet carryall bag that you can place him in when he is with you in the truck. Just keep him within restricted boundaries for now. Allow him the freedom to roam in the yard or in the house when you can be there to monitor him. Believe me, this will go a long way to saving your sanity and keeping everyone in a happy positive mood.

Have to spread the love more, but wanted to say that you are exactly right on with your response.
I encourage Jessy to use her crate. Doxies are known for getting into things if left unattended in a home. The crate is the safest place for him to be.
I am so glad that the "potty training" is going better!!
Ok, I am not sure if anyone else would ever recommend this but it works wonders for my pet. When we go out for just an hour or so or if we take Zeus along with us in the car and have to leave him we put a muzzle on him. I can tell you he likes that a whole lot better than his crate. Since he can't chew anything up we usually come home to find him with his blanket and fav toy on the couch. For longer periods of time we do still crate him though.

That sounds like a wonderful idea. I know that if left alone Tuscany and Ollie would tear my house apart. Who said two heads are better than one?!!?!? In my case 2 heads cause twice the trouble. But I still love them!
