| One of the problems with an 8 week old is that you can't relax even when they are asleep. They will need to go out within moments of waking up. In cold weather, we keep a coat where we can grab it as we go out the door with the puppy. If the floor is carpeted, you may want to gently pick him up and carry him out. If you are luckily, he will be able to hold it a little longer before he is too big to carry. Putting him in the crate, may wake him up. I would at least leave him out when you can keep an eye on him.
If you do have trouble getting him to go to sleep in the crate, try laying down by it until he goes to sleep. All else had failed the night I thought to try that. It has worked very well for about the latest 10 of 10 puppies their first few nights with us.
Do not let using the crate be more complicated than it is. It is just a safe place for the puppy like a crib or playpen.
By the way, 7-8 weeks is the ideal time to get a puppy. The sooner you get them, the harder it is to teach them things like not biting. The later you get them, the more likely to have problems adjusting to your home. |
