Can a person bring parvo virus to my dogs on their shoes/clothes?
My daughter has a dog who just fought through parvo. My question is if she could bring the virus to my dogs on her clothing or shoes, and if she can, how long before it is safe for her to come to my house without infecting my puppy? I went to her house once, and when I came home, I washed the bottoms of my shoes with bleach. So far, my dog has not gotten sick. Is this sufficient when my daughter visits my house?

Here is some excellent info - I was told that it stays "live" for 6 months.

I wouldn't take the chance but that's just me.

How old is your puppy? Has he/she been through all of his/her first year shots?

The virus is transferred through feces and the virus can survive in feces for over a year, sometimes longer. The only way to kill it is with bleach.

I think it really depends on the age of your puppy and the level of immunization he/she has had, how well your daughter cleaned her home and yard after her dog recovered from the virus, and how diligent she is when coming to your home.

I definitely wouldn't bring your puppy to her house until he/she has been completely vaccinated, nor would I allow her dog to come over until this is accomplished.

I can't guarantee that your puppy won't get sick even if you're extremely diligent, but of course you want to visit with your daughter and an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. :)

I really would discuss this with your vet, find out if he/she thinks it's safe and what measures you can take to prevent your puppy getting sick.

I'm so glad that your daughters dog survived this often fatal disease.

    Good luck.
