    Can dogs get concussions
Can a dog get a concussion?
I've been keeping an eye on Ryu all night long, he seems fine, not acting different, no double vision, can concentrate, everything, checked his mouth, his head, front legs, no pain when I press on them or move them.

Last night, while I was sitting on the deck outside, he was playing in the back yard, there is a retaining wall... He normally doesn't do anything near the wall and he decided to take a flying leap off it, and smashed side of his head first onto the ground. For a minute he wouldn't get up... Then he got up, came to me, I checked him out, he seemed fine, he's eating, drinking, playing, I kept an eye on him all last night, didn't get much sleep.. and he still seems his normal self this morning.
I felt horrible because I was across the other end of the yard sitting watching them. It made me feel like I should have been there beside them while they were playing with each other (ryu and owen that is)

Yes, they can. It sounds like he's all right. What is your level of comfort? (I tend toward panic.)

I was a little stressed out about it, because I honestly can't afford an emergency vet visit this close to flying back to nova scotia, I tried to remain calm, and I feel I did pretty well with that until my aunt asked me what happened then she got worked up, which got me upset.
I'm used to working with horses, and other dogs and I know they pick up on emotion very easily so I always try to remain calm, to the best of my abilities as per whatever the situation is

Has Ryu shown any signs of concussion or pain or discomfort from his fall?

Sounds like he's fine! You did everything that's appropriate, he's eating and drinking and walking around, not sleeping excessively - all of that stuff you have to look for.

I always feel so guilty when something like this happens and it sounds like you do, too.

I'd keep an eye open for changes in behavior but it sounds like he's doing better than you are at this point. <smile>

Well he sleeps a ton to begin with LOL. But he's not sleeping any more than he normally does, There's no pain or discomfort, he was playing with his toys a little while after it happened and again today.
Yes I do feel guilty when stuff like that happens, my dog is my life, I don't have children, or a boyfriend or a husband. I don't know what I'd do without him.

I'll keep a close eye on him still, I know I didn't sleep much last night because I was keeping an eye on him. And your right. I bet he is doing better than I am LOL

I know - keep us posted.

(After my husband died I spent many nights sobbing on my dogs. What would we do without our pets?)

    I'll totally keep you posted,
They are our best friends, and I think they'd always be there for us, which is why I'm always there for them

An update for you all. Hes been a bit of a sook.. but he's always like that LOL. He went for a walk yesterday, he's walking good, still alert like he always is... Playing still. No soreness I checked. But your right shazzy. I bet he did have one heck of a headache

BTW. For all of you who also followed the thread about my friend whom was getting the huskie puppy... he's chosen a name... PHOENIX... and I guess the puppy while at the breeders, is responding to the name very well... one eye is blue, the other is turning a greenish blue. So she might be a very neat looking dog
