Best thing to do is to cut out baths altogether. Has the vet assured you he is healthy? If so you should be able to keep him fresh and clean with brushing, several times a week, or even every day. Use a soft bristle brush. Bathing even with the oatmeal strips out the natural oils leaving the skin dry and irritated.

Diet is important, but it is very easy to provide a good diet. Just make sure most of the dog's calories came from a dog chow.

In addition to experience, I have extensive training in dog care. I see the above working with thousands of dogs. There is a lot a bad information on dogs out there. Find a web site suggesting the oatmeal, and it may be put up by somebody selling oatmeal shampoo.
