When does child support stop?

My husband currently pays child support for a 17 and 14 year old and their mother has told them that their dad could have to pay child support for them through college. I thought it stopped after completing high school or age 18. Which is it? Thanks for your help!!

You are correct. It stops at 18 or after graduation from high school, unless he agreed to continue to pay child support through college in the settlement agreement which would have become a part of their final judgment and decree of divorce.

Well actually most child support agreements, and many states require support though college if the child is living at home and attending full time an accredited college or trade school.

** and of course the father of the child should be glad to assist in paying for thier childs college education. So he needs to get his child support paperwork out and see exactly what it says, That is what he is obligated to.

It depends on the laws of your particular state. Some states provide for the continued payment of child support through college, usually up to the age of 23. Check with a local family law attorney to be sure.

Child support stops if the child has graduated and is 18 or over unless you have made it clear that the other parent will pay for college. It must state that the other parent will continue paying if the child is enrolled in college, not vocational school or other. If the child is over 18 but did not graduate and is attending a vocational school for a GED then the child support will continue. If the child graduates before the age of 18, child support will continue until his/her 18th birthday. Many people mistake the "vocational school" or other school as college. This is incorrect. This applies to a child that does not graduate by 18 from an accredited high school and is seeking to get their GED past the age of 18 at a vocational or community college. This does not make a parent responsible for child support beyond the child getting her high school diploma or GED.
This depends 100% on the state the order was obtained from and the divorce and custody orders. THere is no hard and fast rules.
